The sound of shattering glass pierced through the quiet night. It felt as if I was about to fall out of bed. Not out of the open side, but on the wall side. The roof on this side is sloped which means my bed cannot stand tightly against the wall and thus there is a gap. I suppose my leg shot up in a reflex. Reality collided with my initial dream as I was able to clearly see the image of my foot hitting the lamp. The motion did not seem strange, yet, as reality came closer, I realised that this actually wasn’t good. The sound of shattering glass pierced through the quiet night, the contrast between the quiet and the sound being the real shock.
Shit, I killed the lamp, was my first thought before the glass had actually fallen down. I felt completely disoriented as I suddenly woke up. For a slight second, I wasn’t even sure if I was in my own room. For many more minutes, I didn’t know what was left and right- or on which side my door and window were. My body was still about to fall into the gap but I couldn’t quite move with all the glass on top of me and the only light source nearby had just been destroyed. After urging myself to stay calm, I managed to figure out my position and reach my phone on my bedside table. God bless the flashlight app.
You’re kidding me, right? my thought upon seeing the mess.
Great, I can’t just go back to sleep now… I have to clean up.
The advantage of waking up this way is that you’re almost immediately back in reality. The actual happening in reality demanded my full attention and so I did not remember my dream. I dream very frequently and more often than not my dreams aren’t exactly pleasant. I’m not having nightmares, but the dreams leave me with a bad feeling that make it hard to get up in the morning; they make it hard to adjust back to reality. [And even though my dreams are unpleasant, I don’t want to wake up either.
This was the first time I actually destroyed something in my sleep, though. Usually, I’m lying very still- or maybe I never broke something before because there was nothing close enough in my old room. I think this lamp was simply on the wrong place at the wrong time.
This happened yesterday night.
Oooo jeetje haha, dat is zo balen!
